Potter finale conjures up $1 billion worldwide

Harry Potter has joined the billion-dollar club. Distributor Warner Bros. said Sunday that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. It's soon expected to pass "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," which is this year's top grossing movie at $1.03 billion.

The last of the eight films about the young wizard is the first in the franchise to reach the billion dollar mark. The previous best global haul was $974.8 million for the original film, 2001's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."

With $21.9 million domestically this weekend, "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" climbed to a domestic total of $318.5 million. That tops the franchise's previous best of $317.6 million for "Sorcerer's Stone."

But factoring in today's higher admission prices, "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" has not caught up to "Sorcerer's Stone" in terms of actual tickets sold.

The 2009 film "Avatar" holds the record for the biggest worldwide box office haul, grossing $2.8 billion. It's followed by another James Cameron film, "Titanic," which brought in $1.8 billion.

Emma Watson: I'll return to Brown next year

Harry Potter star Emma Watson says she plans to return to Brown University to complete her degree.

The British actress who plays Hermione Granger in the "Harry Potter" series tells The Virginian-Pilot that she remains enrolled at Brown even though she'll study at England's Oxford University in the fall.

She says intends to return to Providence in 2012 to complete her studies at the Ivy League school.

The 21-year-old Watson left Brown earlier this year, saying she wanted to devote her time to the final "Harry Potter" film and other acting opportunities.

The final chapter in the series premiered last week, setting box office records. It took in an estimated $168.6 million domestically from Friday to Sunday. That beats the previous best opening weekend of $158.4 million for 2008's Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight."

Emma Watson taking a break from Brown

Actress needs to focus on promoting final 'Harry Potter' installment. On Monday, Emma Watson announced she'll be temporarily leaving the Ivy League school to promote the final installment of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."
"As you know, I love Brown and I love studying pretty much more than anything but recently I've had so much to juggle that being a student and fulfilling my other commitments has become a little impossible," she wrote on her official website.

"I've decided to take a bit of time off to completely finish my work on 'Harry Potter' (the last one comes out this summer) and to focus on my other professional and acting projects," Watson, 20, continued. "I will still be working towards my degree ... it's just going to take me a semester or two longer than I thought."
Before Watson enrolled at Brown University in September 2009, she also considered attending Trinity College, Cambridge, Yale University and Columbia.
