Most of the season's contestants returned for the live finale, but Richard Hatch was unavailable. He's back in prison once again for tax evasion.

Pirates sails with overseas box office record

Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides weighed anchor with $346.4 million in ticket sales from its first week in worldwide release and set a record as the biggest film debut ever outside North America, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

The fourth installment in the blockbuster Walt Disney Co series its first in 3-D dug up $90.1 million of its box office treasure from Friday through Sunday in the United States and Canada alone, a figure at the lower end of projections.

By comparison, two previous "Pirates" sequels each grossed well over $100 million in their first three days domestically.

But the latest "Pirates" adventure plundered an additional $256.3 million in overseas receipts to surpass 2009's "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" as the highest-grossing international movie opening of all time, Disney said.

All told, "On Stranger Tides" collected an estimated $346.4 million worldwide -- domestic and overseas in its first week. That marks the fourth biggest global opening ever, behind the 2009 "Harry Potter" film, "Spider-Man 3" and Disney's last "Pirates" tale, "At World's End."

The global tally included a record $16.7 million grossed from showings on about 400 IMAX Corp giant-format screens around the world, Imax said.

Setting sail with lackluster reviews but little competition in 4,155 U.S. and Canadian theaters, "On Stranger Tides" also finished its opening weekend as the biggest North American film debut so far this year. It exceeded the $86.2 million grossed by hot-rod thriller "Fast Five" in late April.

The newest "Pirates" adventure pairs returning star Johnny Depp in his signature role as Captain Jack Sparrow with Oscar winner Penelope Cruz, a newcomer to the franchise. The film also co-stars another Academy Award winner and "Pirates" veteran, Geoffrey Rush, along with Ian McShane making his first appearance as Blackbeard.

The comedy "Bridesmaids" ranked a distant No. 2 in its second weekend at the U.S.-Canadian box office with $21.1 million but held on to an impressive 80 percent of its business from the previous week.

Rounding out the top five were Marvel's superhero drama "Thor," grossing $15.5 million in its third weekend, "Fast Five" with $10.6 million in its fourth weekend, and the 3-D animated "Rio" with $4.7 million in its sixth.

Woody Allen's latest offering, "Midnight in Paris," benefiting from rave reviews and a warm reception at Cannes, managed to crack the top 12 with nearly $579,000 grossed from just six theaters in its first weekend in North America.

A robust "Pirates" performance was seen as critical to Disney after the misfire of its heavily promoted but poorly attended animated film "Mars Needs Moms" in March, which dragged down its fiscal second-quarter studio revenues.

Strong overseas showings for "On Stranger Tides," including nearly $53 million collectively in emerging markets such as Russia, India and China over the weekend, underscored the growing importance of studios' international business.

"In the context of the global box office, it's a total winner," said box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Hollywood.com said of "Pirates."

Still, "On Stranger Tides" fell short of debut receipts posted domestically by each of the first two "Pirates" sequels -- $135.6 million in 2006 for "Dead Man's Chest" and $114.7 million a year later for "At World's End."

The very first film in the franchise, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," grossed just $46.6 million domestically in its first weekend in 2003.

Poor reviews never help but the weaker commercial showing for "On Stranger Tides" in North America compared with the last two "Pirates" films may have more to do with a general softness in the current marketplace. Some momentum also may have been lost in the four years between "Pirates 3" and the new film.

With the arrival of "On Stranger Tides," the entire franchise has now amassed over $3 billion in theatrical receipts collectively worldwide, Disney said.

Rebooted 'Pirates' sets overseas box office record

The reengineered "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequel "On Stranger Tides" found its smoothest sailing overseas, where it took in a record $256.3 million at the international box office, according to studio estimates Sunday.

That surpasses the previous record foreign opening of the sixth "Harry Potter" film, 2009's "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which earned $236 million internationally.

Walt Disney co. said "On Stranger Tides," the fourth "Pirates" installment, earned $90.1 million domestically. Its combined worldwide total is $346.4 million, the fourth largest global opening ever.

The new 3-D film jettisons co-stars Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, but brings back Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. "Chicago" director Rob Marshall took the helm from Gore Verbinski, who directed the trilogy. Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane introduce new characters.

It was a risky reboot considering the popularity of the previous "Pirates" films. The last, 2007's "At World's End," opened with $114.7 million.

But "At World's End" was also badly reviewed and disappointing to much of its audience. For Disney, which has expansive merchandising and theme park tie-ins to "Pirates of the Caribbean," it's a crucial franchise. The first three movies earned a combined $2.7 billion worldwide.

"The whole play of this particular movie was based on a worldwide release because of our feeling of how strong the international marketplace would be," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution at Disney. "Johnny is not just a domestic star. Johnny is an international star."

Viane said the result vindicated the franchise's new look, that audiences "loved the rebooted attitude." Viane didn't comment on whether this meant a subsequent fifth film, but that seems extremely likely. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer already has a script in the works.

"On Stranger Tides" was the only new film in wide-release on the weekend. In its second week of release, the acclaimed comedy "Bridesmaids," starring Kristen Wiig, was second at the box office with $21 million. That was an impressively small decrease of just 20 percent from the Universal release's opening weekend of $26.2 million.

The slight decrease was even less than popular comedies like "The Hangover" and "Wedding Crashers," which had similarly sustained business due to strong word-of-mouth.

Last week's top film at the box office, the comic book adaptation "Thor," from Paramount, slid to third place in its third week of release. It earned $15.5 million, bringing its cumulative total to $145.4 million.

Making its limited-release debut was Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris," which has received some of the best reviews for Allen in years. The Sony Pictures Classics release opened in just six theaters, but drew an exceptional per-screen average of more than $96,000.

Though "On Stranger Tides" had the best North America opening of the year, the international revenue was the larger story. The film traded on its foreign appeal by casting international stars like Cruz and setting itself in bright tropical locales.

"This proves the importance of the global marketplace," said Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com.

The film performed especially strong in Russia, China and India, accounting for $52.6 million. It set an all-time record in Russia, taking in $28.6 million.

The film benefited from higher ticket prices for 3-D showings, but perhaps more importantly from IMAX screenings. "On Stranger Tides" set a global record for IMAX with $16.7 million worldwide.

Propelled largely by the "Pirates" installment and the continuing success of "Bridesmaids," it was the second "up" weekend in a row as compared with box office figures from the same weekend last year. Next weekend, the three-day Memorial Day weekend, also appears bright, with debuts from "The Hangover Part II" from Warner Bros. and "Kung Fu Panda 2" from Paramount.

Combined with the second weekend of "On Stranger Tides," Dergarabedian expects it to be one of the biggest moviegoing Memorial Day weekends ever.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," $90.1 million.

2. "Bridesmaids," $21 million.

3. "Thor," $15.5 million.

4. "Fast Five," $10.6 million.

5. "Rio," $4.7 million.

6. "Priest," $4.6 million.

7. "Jumping the Broom," $3.7 million.

8. "Something Borrowed," $3.4 million.

9. "Water For Elephants," $2.2 million.

10. "Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family," $990,000.

Marlee Matlin & John Rich: Too Nice to Fight on Celebrity Apprentice?

Perhaps surprisingly, the two calmest of this season's contestants Marlee Matlin and John Rich ended up making it to the finale of Celebrity Apprentice, which will air on NBC Sunday night.

Unlike others who went before them, the Oscar-winning Matlin, 45, and country music's Rich, 37, never locked horns with others, as did Meat Loaf with Gary Busey, and Star Jones with NeNe Leakes.

Not that there isn't some sense of rivalry between the two finalists. "We are friends but we are still competing," Rich tells PEOPLE. "We still have to go before [judge Donald]Trump and America. I want the quarter million [dollars for charity], and I want it bad."

Says Matlin: "I feel good that I'm working and up against John, because I know his heart is in the game and he's here for his charity. Were not just here for the face time."

Matlin's charity is the Starkey Hearing Foundation, while Rich's is the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

As for dealing with the mad antics that went down this season on the reality show, Matlin said, "When people would start going crazy and fighting, I actually used my deafness to my advantage. I would just turn away and not listen to any of it. I don't want to know. All I wanted to do was stay focused."

Revealed Rich: "The only thing that ever got me was when Richard Hatch and Jose Canseco said my fans were backwards I had to set them straight on that, but I tried to never lose my cool.
